A Road Trip Anecdote

Have you ever been to Pennsylvania? If not you should go some time, it’s beautiful there. Rolling hills, mountains, and trees everywhere. They do have the Pennsylvania Turn Pike but I won’t hold that against them. My mother-in-law and I took the kids to Hershey Pennsylvania for a mini-vacation. We drove out the first day, spent a full day in PA, and then drove back home the last day. So, this trip was three days start to finish.

We had a lot of fun. The day we got to PA we had some time left in the evening so we went swimming in the hotel’s indoor pool. There’s something hugely fun about being in a swimming pool away from home for some reason. It was the most fun I had in a swimming pool recently :) Of course it could have just been the fact that my kids and mother were having so much fun and that was fun for me to watch.

The next day was our “big day”, this was the day we had planned to go to Chocolate Town see the sights and smell the smells. We also wanted to go see some other things around town. We ended up going to Penn Caves to take a boat ride through some caves and then a bus tour of some local wild life. Caves and wild life are fascinating and it was such a neat experience. The kids had a great time seeing all of the animals and I loved the caverns. But because of ambiguous information from the brochure regarding the distance of Penn Caves from our hotel the trip took all day and we got back too late to go to Chocolate Town. But, that’s okay because we had plenty of time in the morning to go before we left for home.

After our cave experience we holed up in our hotel room and had pizza with a movie for entertainment. The next morning, all packed up and checked out, we went to Chocolate World in Hershey PA. We went on a chocolate tour which had singing puppets and smelled like chocolate. The kids loved it. We also went to the chocolate works where the kids got to fill a sprocket with kisses to purchase. After that we went to the shop and bought some chocolate, which tastes freshers when you buy it directly from Hershey. And then we drove home. We had a great time.

But for all of the fun we had I think that we would have had even more fun doing a mini cruise. I tried to plan out our vacation to make sure we had fun excursions but for the most part, since I didn’t know the area, we ended up driving for a large part of our three day vacation. Also, because we didn’t really know what there was to do in the area we ended up spending a lot of time in the hotel trying to figure out answers to the question “so what do you want to do?”

We also spent a considerable amount of time trying to “figure out” what and where to eat which ultimately contributed to how much time we spent driving around.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Sometimes it’s great to get out and have a road trip just for the sake of getting out for a couple of days. However, this vacation was a great example of why cruising is such a great option, especially for those with kids. There is a lot to be said for having someone who knows the area you will be in plan out excursions that you and your kids might like, and arranging the transportation to those excursions. And having eating venues decided for you can make meal times a lot easier also; personally I hate that whole “I don’t care, what do you want to eat?” conversation, it takes too long and usually ends up with everyone deciding on a place where no one really wants to go just to get the decision made.

As far as the cost, on might argue that for a three day road trip the cost is much cheaper than a cruise and to this I would say probably not. You can get cruise rates that are about as low as what you might spend on a small road trip if you consider food, fuel, and lodging costs. You may spend a little more on the cruise but you would likely get an extra day of vacation and none of the hassles of the do-it-yourself vacation.

I loved our little vacation but if it’s all the same I think next time I will look around for an inexpensive cruise and cast my vote for it.

The concept of vacationing is an interesting mix of attempted relaxation and an exercise in flexibility and change resilience. Think about how many vacations you have meticulously planned only to have to change your plans completely when you got there. Maybe it rained the whole time, maybe your lodging was completely less than you expected, or maybe reservations got lost. And then there are activities. Do you plan those ahead? And if you do will they be what you expect, or should you just figure it all out when you get there?

I can remember going on vacations with my family where all we planned was to go to the beach, how to get there, and where we were going to stay. We spent a lot of time driving around trying to figure out what to do because if we didn’t we would spend our time sitting in the sun or in the hotel. And while sitting in the sun is great it tends to get boring after a while, especially for kids, and when that happens the fighting starts.

I recall a vacation where my mother, hitting the last straw, got really mad at me for fighting with my sister. My mother, sister and I (I was 14 at the time) took a train from Ohio to California to visit some friends, and for a good portion of the train ride I complained that my sister was touching me and that I wanted it to stop. Later as a full grown adult I can look back at the situation with more mature eyes and say that I was totally provoked, it was all my sister’s fault for being younger than me and therefore completely annoying; I was a saint for putting up with her as well as I had. ;)

After vacations where we try to cram a bunch of fun stuff into a week or two we get home exhausted and ready for a vacation from our vacation! There has to be a better way! I am here to tell you there is and Cruising is it. Cruising is a vacation option that has absolutely amazed me.

The first cruise my husband and I went on was for our honeymoon and what impacted me most was the total flexibility we had to make the vacation exactly what we wanted, and the resources to change our minds about what we wanted on the fly with little to no fuss. We went with the idea that we would relax and just see how things went but once we saw how many options we had our cruise became a big adventure for us. We saw new places, tried new things, and never once did we feel rushed or as though we had do certain activities out of obligation. Our vacation was all about doing what we wanted to and it was great.

Another aspect of our cruise vacation that I thoroughly enjoyed was the service. During the day our cabin was kept clean with fresh ice water no matter what time of day we went back to freshen up, at night the bed was turned down. The wait staffs in the restaurants and buffets were fantastic. All of the people where were there to make sure our vacation ran smoothly knew what they were doing and did it well, and honestly that made all of the difference. Since we didn’t have to worry about the small details like cleaning, cooking, and itinerary all that was left for us to do was have a great time. And because cruises are all inclusive vacations we didn’t have to worry about incurring hidden extra costs, we knew exactly what we could spend. If I have a choice, cruising will be the way we vacation from now on, I was so impressed.

So the purpose of this blog is to provide information about cruising for people who would like to know. There are a lot of things to consider when picking out your cruise, how to behave while on the cruise, and what to do when the cruise vacation is coming to an end. My husband and I want to make this a great place for you to find answers to all of your cruising questions, we hope you enjoy this site!
